what the label means
Research use only is a regulatory classification describing intended use. It marks a product as a laboratory reagent — intended for in vitro and research applications, not as a drug, supplement, or anything administered to a person. That classification places it outside the framework that governs medicines, which is precisely the point of applying it.
what it does not mean
It is not a purity standard. It is not a manufacturing standard. It does not require sterility, GMP facilities, batch testing, endotoxin limits, or any quality threshold whatsoever. A compound can be labelled RUO and be excellent, or labelled RUO and be a contaminated mess, and the label reads identically in both cases because it is not describing quality.

why it exists
The label is the legal frame that makes the entire market possible. Selling an unapproved drug for human use is prohibited; selling a research reagent is not. The RUO designation, plus a not-for-human-consumption line, is what separates a functioning business from an enforcement action — regardless of what everyone involved understands the actual destination to be.
reading it honestly
Treat RUO as information about the seller's legal position rather than information about the product. When a vendor writes that their peptides are research grade, they have told you which shelf the regulation puts them on and nothing about what is in the vial. Those are genuinely different claims and only one of them is being made.
